When we put it on the menu, there’s that recognition of, ‘Oh, I tried it, but didn’t like it.'” Another goal for the upcoming year is offering more “clean label” foods, which have minimal-to-zero additives and no artificial food colorings, Hartshorne . The school board approved a contract with Gold Star foods, which sells only products that meet federal nutrition guidelines, which will help streamline ordering, Soto said. Laguna Beach Unified is following the USDA’s menu planning, Hartshorne said, which allows the nutrition department to choose five items from four categories: meat and meat alternate, vegetables and fruits, grains and breads, and milk. Portion sizes increase among age groups, according to a USDA document about the plan.

Pesticide, fluoride and bleach: The top 3 nutrition killers in food

The policy gives a clear direction on the way forward for nutrition in the country and provides Ghana with evidence-based issues for building a case for food security and nutrition, communication, advocacy and policy discourse at the national and community levels. In his remarks, Mr Nguyenduc Hoang, United Nations Representative in Ghana who doubles as the Head of Programmes at the World Food Programme (WFP), observed that the WFP, in line with its mandate, remained passionate about food and nutrition security, particularly in countries such as Ghana, where silent hunger in the form of micro-nutrient deficiencies and chronic under-nutrition did not present the compelling images of acute hunger, represented by thin emaciated children. Mr Hoang said Ghana was among 20 countries where stunting was above 20% and where children under five years experienced sub-optimal growth due to chronic under-nutrition and seasonal food shortage. He disclosed that the 2011 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) found nearly 23% of children under five years stunted or too short for their age which represented a very slow decline from the 34% reported 25 years ago in 1988. Furthermore, according to the report, he said 13% of children under-five were underweight and 6% wasted or too thin for their height. Mr Hoang, therefore, underscored the importance of the nutrition of mothers and children as key to unlocking the problems of hunger, and reaping returns on human capital investment.

Ghana: First CSO Consultation On the New National Nutrition Policy Held in Accra

How can you do research or get involved in your own food safety and richness if you can barely think? Most humans only use about 15 to 20% of their brain’s capacity, because they eat the wrong food, day in and day out. You need to “drain your brain” of toxins. Besides fluoride being a neurotoxin that’s found in tap water, it’s found loaded in most conventional fruits and vegetables, especially the “dirty dozen,” which are the ones with soft skin/coating that absorbs and holds onto the fluoride. Imagine how much they spray on conventional and “corporate owned” crops?

Obama

Starting in 2014, insurance plans will also not be able to refuse coverage to someone with a pre-existing condition. The Presidents Fiscal Year 2014 Budget proposal will be investing in this mental health focus by helping teachers and adults recognize evidence of a mental illness in students ranging from ages 16 to 25 as well as additionally providing training to 5,000 mental health professionals. [This] will be tremendously helpful, said president of Mental Health Centers of Illinois, Janice Gambach. [Those who struggle with their mental health throughout the U.S.] have been so disenfranchised. Mental health spending dropped 14 percent during the fiscal 2009 and 2013 years, but thanks to the Affordable Care Act, the increased funding will financially help future mental health clients and providers.

New mental health care bill to decriminalise suicide

For the first time in the history of criminal law reform in the country, Mental Health Care Bill, 2013 seeks to decriminalise acts of suicide by linking them to the state of mental health of the person attempting the act. The forward-looking Bill explicitly states that acts of suicide will not be criminalised and those attempting suicide would be treated to be mentally ill unless proved otherwise and therefore exempted from the current provisions of Section 309 of Indian Penal Code. Section 124 of the Bill states, “Notwithstanding anything contained in Section 309 of the IPC, any person who attempts suicide shall be presumed, unless proved otherwise, to be suffering from mental illness at the time of the bid and shall not be liable to punishment under the said Section.” The Bill thus clarifies that the act of suicide and the mental health of the person committing the act are inseparably linked and have to be seen together and not in isolation. Moved by the Ministry of Health, the Bill lays down a proper provision for the treatment of persons attempting suicide.

Diabetes Warning Signs: What You Don’t Know Could Kill You

The FDA had rejected Afrezza in early 2011 and asked the company to conduct two clinical trials to prove that the second-generation of the device was equivalent to a first-generation inhaler. MannKind had initially filed for approval based on data from the first-generation device, but later updated the application. The first trial, named Study 171, compared Afrezza with Novo Nordisk’s injected insulin NovoLog, and also showed that the second-generation device was comparable to the first-generation inhaler. The second trial, named Study 175, showed Afrezza was better in reducing patients’ A1C levels – a measure of blood glucose control – compared to oral therapy. The company has another experimental diabetes therapy – called MKC253 – in development, along with two potential cancer treatments. MannKind shares were trading at $8.90 before the bell.

Will your health insurer pay for plastic surgery?

“The other advantage of a student plan is you can fold it into your financial aid package so you don’t have to put cash on the barrel,” says Jenny Haubenreiser, immediate past president for the American College Health Assn. Care on campus Whether or not you buy into your school’s health insurance plan, you may be required to pay a fee to help support an on-campus health clinic. Although the fees vary, Haubenreiser says it’s safe to assume a charge of $100 to $200 per semester. This is not a health insurance policy, but the clinics are a good source of primary care for students. It’s important to understand, however, that this typically doesn’t cover hospital stays. “Most student health service is only for outpatient care,” says Martin Rosen, co-founder and executive vice president of Health Advocate, a patient advocacy organization based in Plymouth Meeting, Pa.

Side Clinic at Sun Hotel At the Sun Hotel, where the conference will be held, we will also mount a clinic. This will be a full-fledged clinic [as] it will have senior doctors, pharmacists and nurses based there on a 24-hour basis. In addition to that, when you look at where the conference will take place and the place where the clinic will be mounted, there is a bit of a distance. So, we will put some surveillance system at the conference site.

Programs that achieve recognition have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide participants with comprehensive information about diabetes management. Education Recognition status is verified by an official certificate from the ADA and awarded for four years. The process of recognition gives professionals a national standard by which to measure the quality of the service they provide, commented Varsha Bhan, M.D., Internal Medicine Physician and Medical Director of the Diabetes Wellness Clinic at Advocate South Suburban Hospital. According to the ADA, there are 25.8 million people in the United States who have diabetes. While an estimated 18.8 million have been diagnosed, unfortunately, 7 million people are not aware that they have the disease. Each day approximately 5,205 people are diagnosed with diabetes. Many will first learn that they have diabetes when they are treated for one of its life-threatening complications heart disease and stroke, kidney disease, blindness, nerve disease, and amputation.

Diabetes and low blood sugar

Such people may be given glucagon injection during the process of transferring to the hospital. The general advice is that people with diabetes should not let their blood sugar level be below 4mmol/1 (80mg/dl) at any time and should get personal glucose monitors to use to check their blood sugar levels from time to time. How then can hypoglycaemia be prevented? One of the important steps is to be educated about the causes and symptoms of hypoglycaemia. Each individual on blood sugar lowering medications should understand how they work and their side effects and ensure that proper dosages are taken.
